Where to go from here?

First off, I want to share that Tyler made it to school today :). He had NO fever this morning and only a mildly stuffy/runny nose. Always a good thing!!

Anyways. Tyler continues to not do very well at school. It could be worse, but it certainly could be better. He is currently averaging 20-25% negative behaviors. This change occurred when being taken off of Ritalin, however we are unsure if it also is because the honeymoon period is over. Based upon the notes coming home, Tyler is being 100% Tyler. I am getting the same comments day in and day out. He is being non-compliant, argues, won't do the work, does not follow directions, doesn't pay attention, needs redirection often, needs lots of prompts.

I have been struggling with understanding if this is typical kindergarten behavior....but I think deep down I know it's not. So then I sit here and wonder - how bad is it REALLY? I mean, wouldn't they decide to give me a phone call if things continue this way to meet and come up with a new plan? I asked that question 2 weeks ago. At that time the behavior was at 17%. I was told to give it a few more weeks.

At home there are some good and bad changes since going of rialin. The good: 75% less blinking motor tic. 50% less general sour/unhappy mood. 20% less aggressive/violent moods yet with a 50% increase in verbal and physical attitude such as talking back. However in speech therapy, the aggression and violence continues.

At home, since coming off the medications, he has returned to his normal, silly, hyper self. The house is not quiet at all, he talks like he's on speed, he doesn't make a lot of sense, he is hyper, he doesn't know what to with himself, has no interest in anything at all, is disruptive and physically has little control of his body.

It makes life real tough. We describe our home like a circus. Nerves are always on edge because there is never any calm or quiet (and I mean NEVER). My sanity has returned since I get plenty of time while he's in school, but for my husband who also is on the spectrum and has to spend all day in busy, loud, social-filled classrooms and then come home to an off the wall child, it's just to much for him, as well as my brother who he himself has his own social issues and works all day and desires a quieter/calmer evening. This isn't a kid thing, I assure you. This is definitely an ADHD/ASD thing.

So, Tylers prescribing doctor feels that a stimulant is what Tyler really needs. I have to say that I fully agree on this. He did say we could try straterra however that is not a stimulant and the dr has very little hope that it would do anything. So right now we just don't know what to do. Tyler NEEDS to be medicated. He is suffering as well are we. He could do SO MUCH BETTER in school and of course at home.

We DID get insurance approval for an assessment for in-home ABA. I got a call a couple days ago and was told that we'd likely get that assessment next week. I have a few worries with this as Tyler is typically sweet as cake around new people. SOMETIMES he is evasive....he ignores them and/or gives them major attitude. It would take several hours/weeks for this person to get a REAL perspective of Tyler. But...hopefully they are use to that.
